Aprilaire 800 Steam Humidifier
Humidification, adding moisture to the air, is one of the most important parts of indoor comfort and one of the least understood. Chinook's page says an Aprilaire 800 Steam Humidifier can alleviate the problems of air that is too dry.
Why humidify
What air that is too dry does to a house.
You cannot see, touch or smell humidity, which is part of why it gets ignored. Properly controlled through the heating season, Chinook’s page says it adds to comfort and protects a home and its furnishings.
Dry air is easy to spot. Besides making people uncomfortable, it steals moisture from plaster, wood, glue and fabrics. Over time that can mean cracks in ceilings and walls, loose furniture joints and flooring, shrinking mouldings and loosened wallpaper. Leather dries out, oil paintings crack, house plants wilt and the piano goes out of tune.
Benefits and features

What it does for the house
Aprilaire's benefits, as Chinook's page lists them.
- Protects your interior: optimally humidified air helps protect wood floors, furnishings and the home's infrastructure from damage due to low humidity.
- Relieves dry air symptoms: properly humidified air reduces respiratory irritation triggered by low humidity and helps with itchy dry skin.
- May reduce energy costs: air that is humidified through the cold months can feel warmer, which lets you lower the thermostat.
How it runs
Controls and upkeep.
- Operates automatically or manually, using the included digital humidifier controller.
- Regular drain cycle: after operating for 168 hours the system drains the canister for freshness.
- Quiet, and easy to maintain: it needs only a periodic replacement of the low-cost canister.
- Dispersion technology prevents condensation in the ducts.
- No water filtration is necessary, because drain water flushes with fresh inlet water.
Installation and warranty
What the unit connects to and how much it covers.
- Connects to a forced air HVAC system.
- Accommodates crawl spaces and attics, for out-of-sight installation.
- Provides humidity to homes up to 6,200 square feet, using up to 23.3 gallons of water per day.
- Aprilaire gives a five-year limited warranty on the equipment.
How it works
Two electrodes, a canister of water and a distribution tube.
The Aprilaire Model 800 is a self-contained device that takes clean tap water and boils it using electrode technology. Two electrodes extend into a canister of water, and current flowing between them makes the water boil. The steam travels through a hose to a distribution tube in the moving airstream, and leaves through a series of tiny tubes for an even, drip-free transfer into the ductwork.
A humidifier ties into the same system your furnace serves, so it is worth raising at a furnace visit or on a Comfort365 tune-up. To ask about an Aprilaire 800, call (509) 736-1121 or use the contact page. More add-ons are on the products page.
