American Standard heat pumps

Heat pump installation and service

One system that heats and cools, installed in new homes and replacements across the Tri-Cities, and serviced whatever brand it is.

Chapter 01

What a heat pump does that an air conditioner cannot

A regular air conditioner pulls hot air out of the house and blows it outside. That cools the home in summer, and in winter it is simply not needed.

A heat pump moves warm or cool air in, depending on the season. One system handles both heating and cooling, so a heat pump can replace a traditional air conditioner as well as stand in for a gas or electric furnace. It gives cool, crisp air in summer and gentle heat in winter.

Chinook points out that over half of the energy used in a home goes to heating and cooling. That is why the equipment you choose has such a large effect on the bill, and why a quality heat pump is worth a proper conversation before anyone signs anything.

When a heat pump is the right call, and what it replaces

If your home does not have a heat pump today, putting one in means replacing the existing air conditioner and furnace. It works the same whether the house heats with natural gas or with electricity, so the fuel you burn now does not rule one out.

Chinook lists three situations where a heat pump is typically the more economical choice. They are set out in the list below, and they all come down to the same question: is a big piece of the current system about to be replaced anyway?

In the Tri-Cities the heat pump with an air handler is now the most common pairing, because modern heat pumps keep running in nearly freezing temperatures. The air handler's emergency heat strip switches on far less than it used to.

Chapter 03

Installation is a bigger job than a furnace or AC swap

Chinook installs American Standard heat pumps in new home construction and in retrofit or replacement work. A heat pump installation is more labor intensive and more complex than swapping a furnace or an air conditioner, and the crew has put in countless systems across the Tri-Cities and surrounding areas.

Service does not stop at the brand they sell. Chinook services and repairs every brand of heat pump, furnace and air conditioner. On a heat pump the ninety minute tune-up includes testing the defrost cycle and recording refrigerant pressures, two lines from the published checklist.

To find out whether a heat pump suits your house, ask for a free consultation. Chinook says it gives an honest, expert opinion without the pushy sales pitch, and that starts here.

Is it the economical choice?

Heat pumps are typically more economical when:

  1. A furnace is due

An existing electric or gas furnace needs replacement, so the heat pump takes on the heating job instead of a like-for-like furnace.

  2. An air conditioner is due

An existing air conditioner needs replacement, and a heat pump does the cooling while also handling the winter.

  3. The whole system is tired

Your current HVAC system is old, inefficient and generates expensive utility bills.

Chinook services and repairs all brands, so a heat pump someone else installed is welcome too. If one of the three fits your house, the next step is a free consultation with the crew, or a look at what the air conditioning installation side of a replacement involves.

Local utilities run rebate programs on new heating and cooling equipment, and the rebates page links to each one so you can check current terms and whether you qualify. You can also call (509) 736-1121 and ask.
