Nest Learning Thermostat
Your thermostat controls about half your energy bill, so shouldn't it help you save energy? Chinook's page says the Nest Learning Thermostat learns what temperature you like and builds a schedule around yours.
Energy efficient
Three numbers Nest publishes about itself.
These are Nest’s figures, repeated on Chinook’s page. What your own house saves depends on the house and on how you live in it.
- ENERGY STAR
- Nest describes it as the first thermostat to get ENERGY STAR certified.
- Since 2011
- Nest says the thermostat has saved billions of kWh of energy in millions of homes worldwide.
- 10% to 12%, and 15%
- Independent studies cited by Nest found average savings of 10% to 12% on heating bills and 15% on cooling bills.
How it learns
A week to program itself, and a phone to check on it.
Self programming
Use it for a week and it programs itself. Turn the heat up a few days in a row and it learns you like breakfast at 70 degrees, so it warms the house as you get out of bed. When sensors and your phone's location say you have left, it sets itself to an Eco Temperature to save energy, and it notes it when you turn the heat down on the way to bed.
Nest Sense
It learns how long your house takes to warm up, how drafty it is and what the weather is doing outside, and it learns about your heating and cooling systems so it can run them more efficiently.
Sensors
Nest says ten temperature sensors track the temperature and how quickly it changes, and that activity sensors have a 150 degree wide-angle view to see whether anyone is home. It also follows the weather in your region.
Display and app
The big display lights up when you walk into the room and can show the temperature, weather, or a digital or analog clock face. Once it is on Wi-Fi, the Nest app controls it from anywhere, and can alert you if your home is getting too hot or too cold, for example when the furnace cannot keep up or the AC breaks.
Installation and programming
Ask Chinook to fit it and set it up.
Chinook’s page says a smart thermostat pays for itself and invites you to ask about installation and programming. Call (509) 736-1121 or use the contact page.
A thermostat works with whatever it controls, so it pairs naturally with a new air conditioning installation or a furnace replacement. More add-ons are on the products page.
